The Donner Party

You whispered your hair is soft as though surprised.
You thought I didn’t hear you but I did
I meant to look for Uranus but you distracted me and then …
I went to bed with a book.

Just one foot in front of the other all my life said Tom Joad.
Just one foot in front of the other and I’m not getting anywhere.

You whispered your hair is soft as though surprised
And then, wrapped in what still remained, just whiffs really,
soft but fine and easily tangled
you blew away

You thought I didn’t see you but I did.
To plant your seeds elsewhere
wrapped in cotton so I can always find you.

  1. Hi J.,

What a tiny moment to contemplate and then the more one thinks about it, slowly it becomes everything. Which is, I guess, the point of all great writing. Each of us has such a specific and unique view of the world and with a little inspiration it comes out in the writing. Of course, the Donner Party is so sad, just as it should be. Thanks. Duke I was listening to this when I read the Donner Party and it was perfect.
